How To Introduce Your Child To The World Of Metal Detection
Do you have kids at home? What do they love? Are they book worms? Do they love computer games? Are they hooked to the idiot box? Or maybe they love outdoor games and sports? If they are more interested in adventures, sports, hiking and are fascinated by the words "treasure" and "pirates" then probably you can introduce them to the lovely hobby of Metal Detection. And just to help them in their quest a handy kid's metal detector would be a perfect gift for them.
They can be introduced to this excellent hobby in the house itself – probably in the backyard or the garden. To build their initial interest a few coins may be thrown around for them to find out. Once they are able to locate a few cents or dimes their enthusiasm will cross all bounds and within a few days they will become serious treasure hunters.
Herein comes the story as to how I got attracted to this unusual hobby. Our backyard needed some cleaning. Lots of prodding and requesting by my parents had fallen on deaf ears. I and my brother Sid kept away from it and were determined not to set foot on this part of our dwelling. But our father had found a way to break our promise. He bought us two kids' metal detectors on Christmas and these new tools were just the lollipop needed to make us feel interested in detecting. Soon we were discovering all sorts of unusual things from all over the backyard. And before we knew it the entire area got cleaned and was perfect. It was one of the best gifts that we had handed over to our parents that Christmas.
Now comes the most important part – what kind of detector to buy for the kids? This part is very tricky. Before you venture out to purchase a few things need to be sorted out. You should be aware as to whether your kids will use it occasionally or quite often, if your kid is serious and wants to accompany you on your hunts, where will he go hunting i.e. the kind of terrain, etc. To start with don't go in for an expensive buy. Again don't buy something so cheap that it doesn't serve the minimum purpose because then the objective will be totally lost with your child losing interest in the hobby. The beginner models and a few metal detector wands can be of fine use in such cases. If it so happens that you have more than one kid in the household whose age and height differences are quite pronounced then it is always advisable to buy a detector with adjustable pole and arm.
A few popular kids' metal detectors are Hays Mark 2, Bounty Hunter Fast Tracker, and Garrett 250. You may also think about buying a used model. In these cases be sure that they work fine and always find out the type of batteries to be used with it and where to get their batteries from. Preferably go out, buy those batteries and come back and fit them on and test drive the tool to find out how it works before you are done with your purchase. This way the chances of ending up with a junk will be minimized. With proper weapons and lots of energy start off metal hunting with your kids. They will be bitten by the bug sooner than you can imagine.
