Drug Rep
Ex Drug Rep -- Manipulating Doctors
Pharma Reps Are Sample Droppers. Or Are They?
When I entered this field as a drug rep seven years ago, I was so happy to be part of such an elite sales force. I felt that I was destined to do this, help physicians make better treatment choices, help them improve real patients' quality of life. I could not imagine a more gratifying job than the ability to contribute to the improvement of another person's health.
Now it is seven years later... Many things changed since then. The way I feel about my profession has not changed a bit.
I do have to recognize however the alarming trend that physicians in general have less and less respect for us, many attribute little to no value to what we do. It is not hard to come to these saddening conclusions, considering the increasing number of offices that are shutting their doors to drug reps all together.
What happened? A number of factors have brought on these changes. The frequently blamed shrinking reimbursement rates that are forcing physicians to see more patients which in turn requires them to re-evaluate the way they spend their time is just part of the issue. I still believe there are some other reasons - many of which are in our control - why our customers started to view us in such negative light. I feel that we, pharmaceutical reps are partially responsible for these changes, and there are ways we can turn this around.
Education
Physicians are highly trained professionals. They are also busy running their business and we should always keep this in mind. Just like a good sales person does in any selling situation, we should ask ourselves the questions:
Why should my customer take time to talk to me?
What type of value am I bringing to his practice so that he will look forward to my return?
Many physicians feel that the drug samples we provide are the extent of the value we bring to their practices. While samples are important, they certainly should not represent the only perceived value. We must fight every day to change these perceptions by educating physicians and staff about the risks and benefits of our products. We must engage physicians with thought-provoking questions leading to intelligent clinical discussions. And finally, we must remain patient-focused and want to make a real difference to improve quality of lives.
Respect
It is common sense, yet the golden rule is being broken every day. To earn your customers' respect, you should always be respectful of them. That includes not only the physicians, but also front desk, and nursing staff, etc. What goes around, tends to come around, so believe me, one mistake will cost you lost sales. I have heard about countless incidents where a drug rep's poor conduct has lead offices to shut their doors to all representatives. Ouch... Could this have been prevented. Definitely! Let's not allow ourselves to act in such ways ruining our reputation even further.
Add Value
I have referred to the importance of adding value above. How do we actually do that? It will require some work on your end, some digging, some inquiring to identify opportunities to meet your physicians' needs. It may be as simple as providing patient education materials to a customer who finds it important to educate patients about their disease states and available treatment options. Or it may be that a physician appreciates your genuine interest that you have in wanting to understand the daily challenges he or she is facing, so your visits over time become a nice break in the day. There are hundreds of ways to make a difference, you just have to try to find those areas of unmet needs.
Good luck in your quest to improve our reputation! Trust me, it will not go unnoticed.
