The FLIR Voyager II - A Marine Captain's Dream

The FLIR Voyager II is simply marvelous, a miracle of inginuity, engineering capability, and incredible optics. And for the asute boater just about as near to a "got to get" as I've come across in a good few few years for sure. Depending upon your supplier it weighs in - at this moment in time anyway - at a cost of around $75,000.

OK so the Voyager II Price at (circa) $75,000 cost-price What value will bring you ?

Well it does rather a lot actually.

The Spectacular Voyager II courtesy of FLIR is, to say the least, a trustworthy night vision device for boating applications. It is a strong, multi-sensor, mid range thermal night vision system, specifically designed for marine applications. It features not one, but two night vision thermal imaging cameras as well as one daylight / low light camera.

Let me share with you what makes this really stand out...

One of the thermal imagers has a wide angle field of view - is perfect for night navigation and situational awareness. The other imager, with the narrow field of view, allows you to zoom in on subjects that are too small to view clearly or are simply far away.

And the really clever thing - the flir Voyager II 'overlays these camera images' - to provide a high resolution image but it will not lose situational awareness. The techs call the result "foveal vision".It (foveal vision) is similar to what the human eye does - great focus on the centre with a lot of, if not totally sharp, peripheral vision for deciding upon what should be in focus. Foveal vision allows you to have a wide angle view for situational awareness while maintaining a high resolution area to the middle of the screen to identify objects and for tracking. The FLIR Voyager II manages this using the two independent thermal cameras and a special image processing technique that provides both the foveal imaging mode as well as a continuous zoom between the wide and narrow fields of view. It's fantastic!
