Surgical Instruments and there Types of Metals
AISI: American iron and steel institute has the task of identifying and classifying differnt types of metals and steel.
ASTM: American Society of Testing and Materials sets the bar for metal material.
Austenitic: A stainless steel that cant be heat-hardened. Stainless steel thats in this category is 300 series stainless steel, which is highly corrosion resistant.
Martensitic: Martensitic stainless steel can be toughened by the heat. Stainless steel that falls into this category is 400 series, which is subject to corrosion due to lack of nickel.
Rockwell Scale: Is a scale and method used to measure the strength and hardness of metals.
Stainless Steel: Mostly used in metal in the creating and building of surgical instruments. Stainless steel rusts and stains.
304 Stainless: This is used to create bowls and basins.
316 LVM Stainless: This particular type of metal used to make implantable devices such as screws, pins and plates.
420 Stainless: This type of stainless steel usually comes from Pakistani-made surgical instruments and disposable quality instruments.
Sterling Silver: Used to make probes and tracheotomy tubes.
Titanium: non-magnetic and very tough, Its common to see this type of metal in microsurgical instruments. You can spot this metal by its blue tone and is lighter and stronger than stainless steel.
Tungsten Carbide: This type of metal is used in blades of surgical scissors and jaws in needle holders. When tungsten carbide is used, the handle of the instrument will be gold in color.
Pakistani-Made Surgical Instruments: Pakistan makes up a decent amount of all surgical instruments in the world. As a matter of fact 75% of all surgical instruments are made in Pakistan. These instruments are made in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi. Global companies will look to Pakistan to create descent made low priced surgical instruments.
German-Made Surgical Instruments: Besides Pakistan, Germany makes the second most instruments for surgery in the world. These are a higher grade of quality but are more expensive. Most suppliers will purchase from Germany if there looking for a higher grade surgical instrument.
