Alright, I just tried your pattern and know what is wrong.
Round 1 should add a chain 1 space between each dc and the beg chain. Just 11 dc's plus the beg chain ends up concaving the "square".
Round 2 is correct. After adjusting for the omited ch 1 sps on round 1, I now have a perfectly flat "granny" square using the pattern
So it should read on round 1: Ch 4 (yes 4, 3 for the dc and one for the chain). (dc ch 1) 11 times. Sl st to ch 3 of begining ch.
Then progress as normal in the pattern.
Oops.. I forgot that the pattern on round 2 omits the beg ch for that round. Since you need to slip st first, you will need a chain 3 to bring you to the proper height to make a puff stich.
Man, no wonder this is greek to you. Whom ever wrote this pattern must have been foriegn.
