chemistry lab?
I have chemistry lab this week and we are going to try to inflate Airbags with Baking soda (NaHCO3) and Vinegar (CH3COOH or C2H4O2) Its going to be for a test grade, we need to make it inflated correctly with enough in it to make the reaction work and fill up the bag with CO2, How much of each should i mass out? We are also using ziploc bags
Answer:
The chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar is multi stepped.
Vinegar is acetic acid: CH3COOH
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate: NaHCO3
Mixing the two is simply and acid base reaction.
CH3COOH + NaHCO3 ---> CH3COONa + H2CO3
That last product is carbonic acid which quickly decomposes into
carbon dioxide and water:
H2CO3 ---> H2O + CO2
The CO2 is what you see foaming and bubbling in this reaction.
Since I don't know the size of your ziploc bag, nor do I know the molarity of your acetic acid(vinegar), I found a website for you that illustrates and lists the amount of baking soda and vinegar you need to inflate a balloon.
