Surgical Error
According to wikipedia, most references to foreign bodies involve propulsion through natural orifices into hollow organs.
Foreign bodies can be inert or irritating. If they irritate they will cause inflammation and scarring. They can bring infection into the body or acquire infectious agents and protect them from the body's immune defenses. They can obstruct passageways either by their size or by the scarring they cause. Some can be toxic.
Both children and adults experience problems caused by foreign objects getting stuck in their bodies. Young children, in particular, are naturally curious and may intentionally put shiny objects, such as coins or button batteries, into their mouths. They also like to stick things in their ears and up their noses. Often during surgery, foreign objects may be left in a human being causing an array of potential medical and life threatening problems. There are laws regarding etymologically and iatrogenesis.
Also according to wikipedia, Etymologically, the term "iatrogenesis" means "brought forth by a healer" (iatros means healer in Greek); as such, in its earlier forms, it could refer to good or bad effects.
Since at least the time of Hippocrates, people have recognized the potential damaging effects of a healer's actions. The old mandate "first do no harm" (primum non nocere) is an important clause of medical ethics, and iatrogenic illness or death caused purposefully, or by avoidable error or negligence on the healer's part became a punishable offense in many civilizations. The transfer of pathogens from the autopsy room to maternity patients, leading to shocking historical mortality rates of puerperal fever (a.k.a. "childbed fever") at maternity institutions in the 19th century, was a major iatrogenic catastrophe of that time. The infection mechanism was first identified by Ignaz Semmelweis.
With the development of scientific medicine in the 20th century, it could be expected that iatrogenic illness or death would be more easily avoided. Antiseptics, anesthesia, antibiotics, and better surgical techniques have been developed
Was a foreign object left in you after a surgical procedure? You have a right to seek legal counsel.
Few people are aware of how common it is for a surgeon to leave a foreign object like a sponge, gauze, needle or even a surgical instrument or towel inside the patient after a procedure.
This shocking surgical error can be catastrophic, leading to life threatening infections, bowel perforations, organ damage, and severe pain.
Such cases require a comprehensive understanding of operating room procedures and the various roles of the surgeons and surgical nursing staff.
In such cases, the patient required further surgery, experienced lengthy recuperation and incurred significant medical expenses.
