Stethoscopes for Nurses - Which one is best for You?
If you were a nurse of some decades ago, you will remember when bandage scissors were considered to be a nurse's major status symbol. Now all that has been replaced by the latex-free stethoscope that can even be color coordinated to either reflect your personality or to match the colors of your most liked medical scrubs. However, when choosing stethoscopes for nurses, you will have to look at several facets of the instrument itself including price ranges, functions, acoustic and electronic. As of now, the stethoscope of choice is the acoustic one but in the future the electronic stethoscopes will become more common as prices and weight fall.
Acoustic Stethoscopes
There is a great variety among acoustic stethoscopes. Many factors of nurses' stethoscopes besides the nurse's own hearing ability affect the sounds that she will hear. Just about as vital as hearing the sounds coming from the patient's body does not take into consideration the ambient sounds that keep her focus just on physiologic sounds. When considering stethoscopes for nurses one has to keep in mind the head, tubing and ear tips that all contribute to acoustic performance. Not only nurses but doctors and other health professionals need to use stethoscopes so this article could easily pertain to them as well.
Nowadays acoustic stethoscopes come in various colors consisting of earpieces, binaurals which are the curved metal pieces connecting both earpieces and tubing and a combination of bell and diaphragm. Let's briefly take a look at each piece of a nurse's stethoscope and its function:
When the stethoscope is placed by the nurse on the patient's chest, she can hear sounds of the auricles and ventricles contracting. If a heart murmur or an abnormal valve operation is occurring, that can also be heard with a stethoscope.
When the nurse places the stethoscope on the back or chest, the nurse can hear lung sounds. The lungs usually should sound nice and clear but crackles and wheezes can also be heard.
If a nurse places the stethoscope on the patient's abdomen, bowel sounds are often heard as food and liquid make their way through the patient's stomach and into the intestines.
When a blood pressure cuff is used, a nurse's stethoscope is traditionally used with the blood pressure cuff. Using stethoscopes for nurses, she will want to place the cuff roughly one inch above the patient's elbow. The nurse then inflates the cuff until no pulse can be heard. Then as the cuff is deflated, the nurse uses the stethoscope to listen for the pulse to begin again.
Electronic Stethoscopes
Electronic stethoscopes can do many thing as well as what is listed above. These stethoscopes for nurses are battery operated. Most of them, however, have a warning system that will alert the nurse when the battery power is beginning to run low. Some electronic stethoscopes have small digital displays that will not only show battery status but will also show heart rate as well as volume level.
